The University of Göttingen, officially the Georg August University of Göttingen, is a public research university in the city of Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany. Founded in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover, it began instruction in 1737 and is recognized as the oldest university in Lower Saxony. It is one of the largest and leading academic institutes in Germany with a student body ranging from 20,000 to 24,999 students. The university offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctorate degrees in several areas of study.
