It consisted of three major mosques — Sankore, Djinguereber and Sidi Yahya — forming a medieval scholarly community renowned for its excellence in Islamic and academic studies in West Africa. Under the impetus of Mansa Musa, it played a key role in the spread of Maliki learning and of sciences such as astronomy, medicine and mathematics.
