The University of Freiburg, officially the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, is a public research university located in Freiburg im Breisgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Founded in 1457 by the Habsburg dynasty, it is the fifth-oldest university in Germany with a long tradition of teaching. The university has a combined undergraduate and graduate student population of around 21,600, with about 16% of these students being foreigners from approximately 120 countries. Admission is strictly merit-based, and the university is known for its graduate education and research opportunities, including the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies.
